Sunscreen!

Please still apply your sunscreen (SPF 50) every day of the year – this greatly helps protect against the daily UVA/UVB damage and outside exposure. UV exposure is responsible for 80% of visible skin ageing signs. This occurs throughout the year.

The Science-Led Heliocare 360 range also protects against Visible Light (this is responsible for dark spots and pigmentation) Infrared-A (contributes to premature skin ageing) and Blue tech light. Due to its unique Fernblock technology, it helps to mop up the oxidative damage caused within the skin.

Avoid sunbeds at all costs!

Whilst a winter tan can feel like it gives you a boost, it is extremely damaging to the skin. Sunbeds definitely increase your risk of skin cancer, cause premature ageing and DNA damage.

The high intensity UV radiation that sun-beds emit, cause this damage which can lead to genetic changes and mutations in the skin cells.

Australia banned sunbed commercial use a decade ago, due to the melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma cases reported.

If you have a winter sun holiday booked please do be aware that sun bathing too, damages the skin. A little sun exposure on the arms and legs (for the vitamin D absorption) is acceptable.

Daily Skincare is key!

The array of skincare available can be confusing and daunting, for example many skin moisturisers or serums claim to replenish and hydrate with hyaluronic acid (HA) – however the type and size of molecule of the HA in many shop/online purchased products means it is not able to be absorbed and therefore does not work as claimed.

Maxine Moseley Skin Clinics ‘Drench’ is an ultra low-molecular weight hyaluronic (of 2-10 kda) acid serum that combined with Saccharide Hydromerate Complex, Glycerin and glycogen all boost the deeper penetration and hydration boost effectively.

We recommend a four step ‘layering’, morning and evening routine – starting with a cleanser, then serum, moisturiser and eye cream. Also SPF50 in the morning.

Don’t forget to gently exfoliate twice a week.

We also provide advanced professional skincare from Cantabria Labs, with the AllSkinMed range being effective, quick and easy to fit into our busy lives.

A simple four step regime card is completed, and altered/advanced as necessary for further improvements every 2-3 months.

Hydrate!

We tend to drink less water in the winter months, and with the drying effects of the cold/then warm environments, wind, possibly drinking more alcohol at the Christmas/New Year festive period, this dehydration will all have a detrimental impact on the skin’s appearance. Being adequately hydrated is fundamental to the healthy functioning of your skin. Most of us need 1.5-2.5 litres of fluid per day, dependant on how much water loss you are experiencing from exercise, sweating, differing climates/heat.

Manage Stress & Sleep.

Poor sleep and stress can play havoc on the skin. Try to get into a good routine of sleep (7 hours minimum) and find healthy ways of managing your stress levels.

Hormonal fluctuations including peri/menopause/post menopause.

The changes in our female hormones of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone can cause many skin issues including acne, rosacea, rashes, dermatitis and skin sensitivities, as the oil levels change, and the collagen and elastin fibres reduce and literally unravel. Our skin barrier becomes impaired.

Oestrogen is a potent collagen stimulator, and we loose 30% of collagen in the five years when menopause starts, often feeling like you are ageing overnight.

However, there are plenty of ways to help the skin during this time, from skincare, advanced facials with microneedling and LED Phototherapy, polynucleotides, profhilo, dermal fillers, botulinum toxin – all available at MM Skin Clinics.

Eat well.

It’s easy to get a takeaway or a ready meal when we are busy, however our body also needs good nutrition from home cooked meals including daily fruits and vegetables and salads. Raw is best or lightly steamed. Sugar causes glycation, which if raised, is damaging to the skin, body and organs. This causes AGE (Advanced Glycation End products)

Supplement Vitamin D3 (with K2)

Known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’ – this powerful nutrient does so much more than support your bone health. Its essential for mood, energy, immunity, and even protects against serious diseases. Limited sun exposure in the winter (or all year around) and the lacking of it in our diet means that a large proportion of the population are deficient. Vitamin D3 ensures that calcium is absorbed easily and the K2 activates osteocalcin, which takes the calcium into the bone.

Source Vitamin D3 with K2 supplements and take a daily dose!
